The topic of the Felger and Mazz show today on 98.5 the Sports Hub was the Patriots upcoming draft. Particularly the 2 players discussed were Heisman finalists, who both come with question marks about off the field issues: Manti Te’o and the “Honey Badger” Tyrann Mathieu.
Now let me start by saying that Felger is both as popular and as hated as he is because he’s essentially a sports shock jock. He says outrageous things you’ve never heard before but you listen because he grabs your attention. Tony is there for comic relief. He’s essentially Felger’s “yes man” and almost never disagrees with his co-host. I like these 2 a lot. I enjoy Felger because he often says things that I’m thinking. He calls out ESPN for being the phony, non-controversial network it is. He called out Josh Beckett relentlessly for being a fat tub of lard. He hates a lot of the same things I do about the NBA. Today he was right about the Honey Badger but wrong about Te’o.
- At least Felger thinks I’m funny.
Tyrann Mathieu was the most dominant defensive player in the country 2 seasons ago at LSU. While leading the Tigers to the National Championship game he put fear in opposing receivers as he laid deadly hits across the middle and disrupted receivers timing. His problem is his love for Mary Jane. Dude likes to smoke weed. When he was at LSU he failed multiple drug tests (for WEED). He was kicked off the team for this unforgiveable offense and decided to go to rehab (for WEED???). He took the season off from football to focus on his classes and come back for one final year. Then in October 2012 he was arrested. FOR WEED!!! Cops searched his apartment and found a whole mess of Ganja, as well as baggies and scales. His career at LSU was officially over after that.
Just when you thought you’d never hear from the Honey Badger again, his name has resurfaced as he attempts to get drafted by an NFL team. Some sources are saying that he might not be drafted in any of the 7 rounds. Are these teams INSANE!!!??? First of all there is absolutely no way Bill Belicek passes on him for 7 straight rounds. The Honey Badger can straight up play football. His biggest weakness isn’t his affinity for bong rips; it’s his size. He’s about 5’ 9” and 185 pounds. He can only bench press 225 pounds 3 times (less than most starters at Auburn High School). To me none of this matters at all. He is a playmaker. He forces turnovers. He can play safety or corner. He is a difference maker on special teams. Most importantly he gives 100% on the field at all times. As long as he is laying the hammer on the field what does anyone care if he’s rolling doobeez with his boys late night? I’ll never understand why weed costs players so much in draft stock.
Here’s how I assess weed guys algebraically: X – 2 = Y.
X= Round that a suspected pothead would be drafted in.
Y= Round where the player should be drafted, and will be drafted by Bill Belicek.
If they’re saying he’s a 6th or 7th round pick, then Belicek will draft him in the 4th round. That’s because Belicek isn’t a moron prude like so many out there. He’s trying to win football games, not be the moral police. Aaron Hernandez is one of the best tight ends in football, that should’ve been a 1st or 2nd round pick. Instead teams like the Browns and Cardinals passed on him 5 times because he experimented with Mary Jane at Florida. And what was the first thing Michael Phelps did after winning 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympics? Take a big ol bong rip!! Stoners don’t beat their wives, they don’t kill people outside of nightclubs, they don’t flip out on reporters, and they don’t become locker-room problems. They just puff the magic dragon and eat a bunch of Cheetos. Quite frankly, with Mathieu’s size, he could use a couple extra pounds.
Te’o is another great value in this draft. Felger thinks he’s too much of a risk, but I strongly disagree. There are 3 big reasons teams are scared of drafting Te’o and in my opinion only 1 of them is legitimate.
1) They are worried he is gay. They might not publically say it but there is just no way that this isn’t in head coach’s minds. NFL locker rooms are meathead central. They’re as homophobic as possible. Who can forget Rodney Culliver’s famous comment before the Super Bowl:
“No we don’t want to no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff in the locker room. Gotta come out 10 years later after that”.
That quote tells you all you need to know about the acceptance of homosexuality in professional sports. No professional athlete has ever come out of the closet while playing in the league. Several have come out after though. With Culliver’s comments it’s no wonder why. Te’o could be a really stupid heterosexual who got catfished. He could also be a repressed homosexual who is unable to come out because of his Mormon faith and the mentality of idiots like Culliver.
Coaches might see this as a potential problem in the locker room, but I don’t. With the current atmosphere Te’o would never come out of the closet if he were in fact gay. He’s gone out of his way to let us know how straight he is on the Katie Couric interview.
“Far from it Katie. FFFAARRRRRR from it”.
For the record, as a heterosexual my response to that question would be “Nope”. End of story. No need to explain just HOW far away from being gay I actually am. Just No.
If times do change, and he does come out, then it’s not going to be a problem anyway. As much as Notre Dame haters don’t want to admit it Te’o is a great football player. He’s a tad on the slow side for the NFL, but his coverage skills are excellent and his nose for the ball is something you just can’t teach. I’d love to see Belicek go after him.
2) They are worried he’s stupid and naive. If he’s telling the truth (which he appears to be) he thought a fat Samoan dude named Ronnie was his girlfriend for over a year. I really don’t care about this either, and neither should coaches. What exactly are they worried about? Do they think he’ll be “catfished” again? I think if there’s one definite we can take out of this it is that Manti is done with the online relationship world. Any coach worried about this is a moron and the Pats should graciously thank them for passing on Te’o.
3) He got tossed around like a rag doll against Alabama. This is a legitimate concern. Chance Warmack literally used his fatness to drive Manti 10 yards downfield on every run play. Time after time in that National Championship Te’o was pancacked by an offensive lineman or trucked by running back Eddie Lacey. The problem is that all of those players on Alabama who dominated him will be playing on Sundays. That was his NFL tryout. You can dominate Michigan State and Navy all you want. Hardly any of those clowns are going pro. I definitely think this is a concern, but let’s keep it in perspective; it’s just one game. Mentally he was out of that game. He knew that sh** was about to hit the fan with the girlfriend hoax. He had great games against Oklahoma and Stanford in the spotlight and both of those teams will be sending their meatheads to the NFL.
Here are some highlights from the Alabama game. Watch the play that starts around 38 seconds. Te’o (#5) gets manhandled by a mid-drift bearing Chance Warmack.
So what do you think? Does either Mathieu or Te’o concern you? Would you want the Patriots to draft either or both of these guys, and in what round? Feel free to share your comments.
